RIO DE JANEIRO BRAZIL-(16-2-2004) After three races at the Finn Gold Cup, defending
world champion Ben Ainslie has moved up into third place overall after
scoring a seventeenth and a third in the tricky conditions on day two of the
championship.
Dutch sailor Sander Willems had the best day of the fleet and mastered the
light wind conditions and strong tide which resulted in him taking an early
lead over the fleet. Jonas Hogh-Christensen of Denmark is in second place
overall, two points in front of Ainslie, with the 1996 Olympic champion
Mateusz Kusznierewicz of Poland just one point behind in fourth place.
Fellow Team GBR sailor Charlie Cumbley put in a good performance, scoring an
eleventh and a twelfth, and is currently placed fifth overall.
In each race the top five has changed dramatically reflecting the difficult
sailing conditions in Rio and with just six points between first and fourth
the racing is guaranteed to be close although there is still a long way to
go in the championship.
A further two races are scheduled to be sailed tomorrow with a total of nine
races making up the championship, which concludes on Friday 20 February.
